Heck, I’ve even heard some of its biggest fans call it ugly.īut that hasn’t stopped this 155MB indie hit from attracting thousands of players with its unique blend of humor, lore, and gameplay. Undertale ($9.99)įew games smash the idea that the best modern games need to have storage-hogging, lifelike graphics quite like Undertale. This is one of the best games of all time, and we’re fortunate to have it on the Mac. There’s even a “Grand Master” mode that captures the spirit of pen-and-paper Dungeons & Dragons. And that’s not even mentioning all the other features, such as the co-op mode, PVP, or the combat system that encourages environmental interaction. Then there’s the emphasis on choice, which affects everything from the characters you play or the instrument that dominates the soundtrack. There’s the story, which manages to be moving and laugh-out-loud funny in equal measure. “Divinity” is such a fitting name, as every element flirts with perfection. The bar for making something better than this is so high that it might as well be in low-Earth orbit. If you only have time for one computer roleplaying game, then make it Divinity: Original Sin 2. Also a standout: the voice acting of J.K. whose passion for her work goes to inhuman extremes. It’s also darkly relevant these days, centered as it is on a struggle with a malevolent A.I. It’s both memorable and challenging, and those challenges are designed in such a way that you feel triumphant when you finish. It’s a puzzler at heart, but it injects those puzzles-which involve the best placement of the titular portals, which you create with a gun-into a masterful concoction of science fiction, memorable characters, and even a catchy song. Matchmaking times may vary according to time of day (alongside skill levels within unranked modes) which is to be expected, but aside from the occasional complete blow out from a vastly superior opponent, Magic: The Gathering Arena has everything a collectible card games player needs to find themselves time warping to tomorrow.Portal 2 may be the perfect game. And, unlike other games with microtransactions, Magic: The Gathering Arena creates a gameplay experience that doesn’t feel like its driving a pay-to-win model down a casual player's throats. If that isn’t enough for you, daily challenges and revolving game modes keep the games fresh while keeping players on the hunt for precious wild cards which can be used to gain any cards a player may not already have. The gameplay loop is simple: Starter decks will allow any player to jump into the fray, and casting spells and winning matches earns in-game currency which, of course, is used to buy packs of cards to strengthen your deck. Anyone looking for a mentally stimulating venture should consider Magic: The Gathering Arena, as much of the game exists in the deck builder itself. TroveĬard games bring a unique flavor among single player titles as they frequently require strategies to be formulated before the match even begins. With its active community and several expansions at your fingertips, feel free to sink embarrassing amounts of time grinding out dungeons while asking yourself if it's the year 2000 again. Prepare yourself for an isometric trip through gothic scenery, barren natural landscapes and, of course, a few brimstone and fire pits as you turn your demonic foes into stains using magic, steel and good old fashioned brawn. New players who are willing to check out some of the promotional materials will be pleasantly surprised at the quality of the cinematics, which are a step beyond what most expect from a small indie studio. Published by Grinding Gear Games, a unique aspect of Path of Exile is that it doesn’t have an in-game currency and instead uses an item bartering system should a player need anything. Path of Exile has all the spell casting and demon slaying you can shake a stick at minus the price tag of its Blizzard competitor. This Diablo-esque fantasy brings a lot more to the table than just a repetitive soundboard and a few hours of mashing hotkeys. Available on PC, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One
